Everybody needs somebody ...

To paraphrase Merriam-Webster, a community is a group of individuals with common interests. That definition does not come close to describing Your Shot. This past weekend, I watched as many of you uploaded for the first time, raised a question, and had it answered by one of your own. I could have responded, but didn’t because there was no need. That is what a community does. Individuals step up, reach out, and help each other.

Keep up the good work!

Words Matter

Posted may 20, 2013

Wow! It hasn't even been a week since we launched and we are amazed at the photos being submitted and the response from the community. Keep 'em coming!

While every photo may tell a story, a caption can help connect the dots for the viewer—words matter, too. If there is a story behind the photo, be sure to include it. Don't forget the details and bits of information that explain the who, what, when, where and why of the photo. A great caption can take your photo to the next level and make it even more memorable. The better we understand the photo, the better we get to know you, the photographer. Why, at that specific moment, did you click the shutter?

Tell us more. We can't wait to hear.

Who are you?

Posted may 14, 2013

As we launch the new beta website, we are asking ourselves who are these passionate, creative people who have made this community what it is and who are the new members who will help shape the community moving forward. So as our first public beta assignment tell us a little about yourself through photography—show us who you are.

We look forward to meeting you.

Having an assignment offered has been a wonderful way to challenge myself and stretch the imagination.  I tried many different techniques that I might not have even considered before this assignment. I just want to thank you for the time, effort and work it takes to make this site available. It has been nothing short of amazing to be able to bond with others who have the same passion and to see their work displayed. It has been a fun and entertaining way to learn.

Hello, My name is Matt and I have always wanted to be a nature photographer and for once I'm finally getting around to doing something about it. I really love this "your shot" and can't wait to fill it with my photos. Enjoy my photos, not to brag too much but I am told they make great wallpapers :). I am a fanatical outdoorsman so expect more animal shots, right now we have had alot of bad weather here in the SE of Pennsylvania so for now I am doing alot of flowering plants and trees and channeling Audubon BUT there will be more animals on the way I promise you. My next photo shoot will be on the Cicada. Once they emerge in my area.

Hello everybody! Im just new in this community as well as a new user of an SLR but NG has been a part of my learning  since i was in college.  I'm very glad NG has this part of sharing photos even for an amateur like me.  Its my first time to upload photos and submit it in this assignment.  I took a lot of courage to post my photos and share it with you guys because I've seen all their works and most of them are great!  I hope you can visit my space here and help me improve.  Do comment and suggest though i only have few photos =).   Thanks NG! Hope you'll know how much knowledge you've stored in my brain....and actually, NG gave me the spark for photography (which i almost give up)  a long long time ago. Glad i got one good cam now and it's a nice feeling I'm already a part of this big community.  Keep inspiring us NG!

Is there a way to go back to my previous comment if the page won't scroll to the previous comments? I'm sorry if there is a way to see the past comment. I just wanted to say thanks for the nice comments before, and this has been fun seeing everybody's photos. What a great site and what an inspiration too.

I have a question on the rules which may seem understood by most but - cropping isn't mentioned at all - is that an ok edit?

Hi Monica!   Quick question about NG stock photography.  Several years ago my 1st DD pick was requested to be used for NG stock image portfolio.  Is NG still actively requesting images from the DD and other user submitted content?  Just curious.  You guys rock.  Thanks!

In the transfer to the new system, I lost a significant amount of my previous descriptions. I think we used to have a 500-character limit, and now it appears to be around 400. Also, I've lost all my star-ratings and comments that used to be so valuable. My new gallery indicates some comments, but when I click to read them, they are nowhere to be found. A message says to be patient since it might take a few days, but it's been a few weeks.

I'm Jorge Ricardo. Is my first time writing here. I love natural environments. Get photos to birds, specially, falcons. When I was e child, I watched "El hombre y la tierra". Spanish serial directed by Felix Rodríguez de la Fuente about natural live. That serial create in me, the interest to know about species. Principally animals.

I'd like travel the world taking photos from animals in it's natural environments.

 Thank you.

I'm Cristina and I've just decide to pop in to say how great I found this new website. Being able to be part of NG since few years ago it had given me the opportunity to share my passion with people from around the world and to learn from the shots of so many talented people. I love the new opportunity of the assignements and the chance to interact with staff of NG. You've made a great job, still few things perhaps to do (I hope I'll be able to see all the comments of  my old shots migrate into the new one soon) but the quality of the images now it's great!!! I was so very proud to be part of your book Life in Color that I made all my friends to buy a copy! So thank you very much to everyone for being here!!!

Now I have a curiosity! I know that development staff is already migrating all the photos from the old My Shot to the new community platform. But what happens if, by chance or even inattention, someone here resend a photo that has belonged to his old gallery and that would later be migrated? It is advised to wait for the formal migration or we can redo the uploads of photos we had before, now for the new site. This would help or hinder the staff in its migration work? Whoa! How many questions! The stupid guy in the above assumption, which uploaded an old shot, is me! :)

Hello!  I have made my way back to NG after initially posting only 3 photos.  Today I have uploaded the 15 max for the week.  The majority of photos are of a Sandhill Crane's nesting place.  I am relearning a lot right now due to physical injuries.  It took me 3 1/2 years to relearn how to upload a photo!  YET, I got it!  And now it is one of my new normals in life.  I love shooting wildlife, birds mainly, flowers, at pet rescue we feed infant racoons and squirrels, etc.  I do not have an expensive camera yet i do have fun and take the camera that I have with me everywhere.  I don't want to miss anything!  Always worked 1 - 3 jobs so now I am reaching out to see things that I never saw before.. I saw a woodpecker for the first time ever a couple months ago. I like having fun in whatever I do.  I did make a mistake already today when uploading photos.. a couple/few have edit in them.  I read the instructions after I entered all.  So, from now on, before I enter I need to read.   Sorry.  Also, I tend to write too much so, I am so glad to be part of National Geographic and I am very excited that my photos will be critiqued for me to know what I'm doing good, what I need to learn better or just learn.  Many thanks to all of you that I'm thinking will be the ones to view my photos and make comments?  or is that done by NG staff?  Blessings to all...

Do you need permission from every person that is in a pic you post on this site?  I know the rules for anyone under 18, but what about just a person walking down the street , etc?

Hi , I am just 15 and am curious to roam through the entire world and capture moments that are ignored by millions. and at last I have found the way but the problem is that I am not a professional nor do I have the resources to reach for the best but I expect that the viewers seek the true essence out of my shots. Feeling happy !

This is not only related to the assignment, so if this should be posted somewhere else please let me know. :)

I am very happy to know that NG has taken precaution to protect the photographer's copyrights on this website. However, I noticed that while being on my iPhone I could easily save my pictures  from this website on that device. If I can do that then surely someone else can do that too. The  picture quality is worse of course,  but I just wonder if  this something that could be prevented? I know that we can never be completely protected (screenshots can be taken. Again with loss of quality but still.)  Otherwise I am impressed that NG takes copyrights so seriously. Linda

In the past I had such a hard time figuring out which photo to submit for the DD but now you made it so much easier and so much more exiting ! Thank You ! I have absolutely no problems commenting or navigating on this site, it has become my second nature...One of my favorite things on this site is the involvement  of the Editors and their comments, explanations. You use to be "mysterious Editors" now you are "friend Editors" ! Keep up the great work ...

Hello!

I've tried to upload a photo 3 times now, and each time the color has been off... It's a very warm photo, but when uploaded here looks very grey and muted colors.  Any input?

Hi.

My submission to the Who is Your Shot assignment does not show up in that gallery.  I uploaded it from My Photos, and there it says it has been submitted, but no trace of it in the gallery of submitted entries. It has also been counted towards my upload quota for the assignment. Is this normal? I'm new here so would be thankful for a reply

Hello, i have uploaded three photographs yesterday, but these are not reflected or seen in the all submissions or most recent submission page. Please suggest. I have chosen these photographs for "who is your shot" assignment from my photos which i had uploaded for your shot.

I notice hardly anyone uses a watermark here, should we?  Does a watermark affect your chances in the DD and/or Assignment?  Just curious to learn more. -Thanks

I was out on an extra long weekend visiting some national parks so wasn't active. Grand Canyon (North and South rim) NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Red Canyon NP, Zion NP and Death Valley. Bought nat geo's "Complet National Parks of US" and fell in love with NPs in US. Will go back again for sure.

And, I guess its clear that this bragging made no sense right now :P

Actually, what I wanted to throw light on was the fact that we are not discussing anything about the assignment in this section. Rather, we are still busy with the new layout of the website. While the new layout is awesome, but we really should stick to assignment discussions in this part atleast.

How to achieve that?

Webmasters at nat geo can create another public discussion section just like we have one for current assignment, one for last assignment and one for popular hashtag. One dedicated section for discussing new website can really redirect questions to that section and convince people that this section is for discussions on THIS ASSIGNMENT ONLY.

Thank you for responding. While it is certainly true that there are many links at the bottom the page, there are also, in my opinion, a few problems. Basically, if all you want to do is see photographs by this thoughtful and eloquent photographer, not a single link stands out as the link to click. For example, "Let's Explore" seems to be the opposite of what I want, since it implies a widening view of a bunch of things, rather than a focused view on a single photographer.

Below this are three lists of links in tiny grey type and almost invisible the grey-on-grey color scheme. Unless I already knew that the photographer is part of an on-line photo project called "Your Shot," which is the 11th out of 12 links in that section of the page, I won't click it. If I do eventually figure this out, I click  on it and go to a generic "Your Shot" page.

What is this? I ask myself. What happened to that photographer whose work I wanted to see? What was his name? [back button]. Oh, James M Shook. [forward button]. Ok, lots of photos by different people. But how do I find Mr. Shook? I know! There's a search box. Type in the name and off you go to...  no results. Oh well, maybe he takes good pictures. I'll never know.

The point I'm trying to make is that the "Main Profile" page is not a plausible way to get to my (or anyone's) collection of photographs as shown on the "Member Profile" page. Nor is any other page that I have seen. You can get there only if a photograph by me (or anyone) is being featured as Popular Today, is a Featured Member, or the visitor is patient enough to search the various categories hoping to stumble across one photograph by... that name... what was it...?

Since direct access to my (or anyone's) "Member Profile" page is a matter of chance at best, I have to conclude that NG doesn't want people to do that. So they made it virtually impossible*. Evidently NG wants our photos to serve as elements in a changing and unpredictable display on the "Your Shot" home page, chosen by those NG photo editors who look at EVERY PHOTOGRAPH! that is uploaded. Anyone who joined the site thinking it would be a showcase for their photos as a body of work together is not going to have that experience. Unless they are lucky/good enough to star in some "Your Shot" project, their work will be buried within the site, never to see the light of anyone's monitor.

So why does the "Member Profile" even exist? I thought it would form a nice gallery of photos, some of which might possibly star in a "Your Shot" project. Only the second part of that assumption seems to be true (and it's a long shot.)

At the moment there are 6,309 submitted photos for this story. And it's not closed yet.

*There seems to be a way to see all of the members, but I don't think I could finish that scroll before the ultimate heat death of the universe.

James M Shook

I have a question about the structure of the site. I have a page where you can see thumbnails of my photos, can click on one to see the full-size versions etc. This seems to be called my "Member Profile." At the upper right of this page (where my last name wraps awkwardly, by the way) there is a link to my "Main Profile." OK, I go there and read some words I wrote and gain a deep understanding of my artistic philosophy, which makes me want to look at my photos more closely.

But how? There isn't a link to anything on that page, much less a link to my "Member Profile." I have to use the browser's "Back" button to get out of there. (When I used to design web sites I called this a "lobster trap" page--you can go to it, but you can't get out.)

So, what is the "Main Profile" for? The information density on that page is low, to say the least. And if you don't remember how you got there, you're trapped. If you get in there from a misguided link or search engine, once you have read my deathless prose there is nothing to do except undisplay/display the white "vellum" box. Fun for a while, but I find I eventually want to move on.

What is the function of this enigmatic page in the structure of the site?
