    This happens sometimes when I swim in the lake (Lake Ohrid, Macedonia). I presume snakes are intrigued by the snorkel. Watersnakes are generally harmless, unless they feel threatened, and then they'll defend themselves, like all other creatures. This kind of close encounter is very educating.
