At the now abandoned Grytviken whaling station (South Georgia), this lone King penguin stood motionless for several hours, like a solitary sentinel, guarding memories of atrocities past, ensuring that no one forgot what had happened here less than 60 years ago. After about 2 hours of gentle wind, the breeze stopped, it feel silent, and the snow started to fall, making the moment even more poignant.

    Thanks Mike,

    Very happy indeed.

It's funny, one of favourites and it never made the daily dozen, nor editors favourites so I thought maybe not that good then a month later, photo of the day!

You're nailing it with these shots!! The way you're using the light to help capture the animal emotion and present it in a human relatable way is genius!

The shot itself conveys the emotions, the story, the moment, everything. I'm not really that great a photographer, but the frame you've chosen for this one works well. Amazing job, Doug!

This is such a powerful image. The dignity of the sentinel, like a majestic and loyal honor guard, is the poetry of the moment. Marvelous!

    Thanks Peter,

That's really nice you of you to say so (and take the time to do so).

You capture some nice colour with your Powershot

I like the lion copy in the lion pic which says "Neither angry, nor distressed; neither drowsy, nor furious. Just, curious"
