This has been a wild and exciting journey—editing some 18,000 images of fantastic photographs of this diverse planet, from the tiniest insects to great mammals to our oceans, weather, and majestic landscapes all across the globe.

Some images were beautiful portraits of backyard critters and others were arresting portraits of wildlife that are rarely seen in the wild and often endangered. No matter what the subject matter, the most important criteria for me was choosing images that best captured the spirit of the competition in various areas. I wanted to include animals, insects, birds, and landscapes—and you gave me plenty to choose from. The diversity of images was magnificent.

The most successful animal images captured the personality or behaviors of an animal, rather than being just straightforward portraits of the animal's face or body. The best landscapes were often sweeping, with dramatic light, weather, or terrain. I looked for landscapes that felt untamed, portraying Mother Nature as the wild, awesome force that dwarfs and awes us with her power and beauty.

So many of you did this successfully, commenting on how you waited for hours for the perfect lighting or waited for just the right moment. It paid off. Every one of the images selected for the story has a very unique quality that made it stand apart, whether through lighting, movement, or action.

    Editor's Note

I love the richness of the colors, the deep red against the royal blue sky and deep blacks all set off by a band of white which is echoed by the flamingos on the lake. Nice composition!

Whenever you're photographing this untamed world, keep in mind you are also telling a story. This will give your audience more context. Close-ups of an elephant's eyelash or a lion's yawn are both contextual and unique photographs that tell a story about those animals, but also remember to shoot big and wide—and thoughtfully. Take us to the place where you're shooting so we can experience it through your images—all the textures, colors, sounds, space, multitude of creatures, stillness, and even the smells. Keep going wild!

@Celina K. Hey Celina, to be quite honest camera equipment only plays a small role in  the world of photography. What you need to focus and practice on instead is framing, photo content (an element that will catch your viewer's attention) and composition. That will differentiate you from other photographers. But if you insist, you can't go wrong with either Nikon or Canon. Even with cheap bodies from both brands, you can still achieve epic photos. You also have to take into account what genre of photography you are interested in (ie. landscape, portrait, street photography, wedding etc.) Then work your equipment list from there. Cheers!

@Andrew Burgos Thanks so much for the useful information and great tips. I'll definitely purchase an affordable camera and start taking shots. :)

@Celina K. I would recommend looking at certain features of a camera to decide whether it is right for the kinds of photography you want to do. First, figure out if you want a dslr, or a point and shoot camera. DSLRs have very good image quality, and entry levels in Nikon and Canon are great. For Canon, check out the Rebel series. For Nikon, look at their D3200, D3300, and D5200. Make sure the camera you buy has the specs you will need for the kind of photography you want to do (High ISO, Frame rate, etc.). Hope this helps.
