I’m going to go ahead and say it: This is the hardest assignment Your Shot has ever run. It not only asked for real human contact and communication, but also for you to let go of part of your own work to help a child. I think that with the right equipment, nearly anyone can make a fancy photo of the night sky or an exotic festival or a flower, but there is no shortcut to this kind of photography. For that reason we had substantially fewer entries.
Much of what I'm sharing in this published story is not the paragon of technical ability or composition, but these parents and children are examples of the spirit I was looking for. These photographers and little shooting partners did something that's much more interesting to me than digging though old archives to pull out “best of” shots. These photographers went out together in search of something much more meaningful than a postcard photo. So to those of you who embraced the spirit of this assignment, I say thank you. Your work, I hope, will likely carry on for many years with your child.
