Assignment

My Best Photos of January 2019

This assignment ran from Jan 25 to Feb 1, 2019.

The prompt for this assignment is simple: Share your best two photos taken from January 1-31, 2019. If your submission does NOT meet this one assignment criteria, you will NOT be selected for the final story. Deadline is February 1, 2019 at 12PM EST.

To really take advantage of Your Shot, a platform where you have the opportunity to receive expert feedback from National Geographic photographers and editors AND encouragement from fellow community members, you need to keep shooting and not just share older photo from your archives — and that is the mission of these “My Best Photos of (Month)” assignments. To become a better photographer and more thoughtful storyteller, you need to keep practicing, you need to keep shooting. Not just when you are in some exotic location, but in everyday situations in your community with family, friends, and neighbors. Practice now, so when you are on vacation or on assignment, you are ready as a photographer to follow the light, observe the composition, and anticipate the moment.

For more inspiration, check out the “My Best Photos of August 2018,” "My Best Photos of September 2018,” “My Best Photos of October 2018,” and “My Best Photos of November 2018” final stories. Of the 122 photos selected for these four final stories, 49 Your Shot photographers were published for the first time. This can be you — if you take this opportunity seriously.

As I’ve written before, Your Shot is a global community representing 195 countries and through these “My Best Photos of (Month)” assignments, together we are creating monthly visual diaries of our world — and I really love that concept. To see a fantastic example of this visual diary, check out my “On January 1, 2019, I…” final story.
