Rethinking Portraiture

This assignment ran from Aug 21 to Aug 30, 2018.

Coming off of Maggie Steber’s “Not Just a Face” assignment, how have you been rethinking portraiture? Did you find inspiration after your third submission? Did you see a photograph from her story that sparked an idea for a portrait you wanted to make? This is your chance! Now that Maggie’s story has launched, I want to offer you another opportunity to participate with a short follow-up assignment. Submit photos that challenge the typical expectations of a portrait and illustrate the person’s story beyond their appearance.

I don't have rules on what kind of portraits you submit so images with faces are, of course, allowed. I want to build on what Maggie started!

On August 23, 2018 at 12pm EST, this assignment will open up for only two submissions. The assignment will close August 30, 2018 at 12pm EST. That is seven days for your two submissions. You are welcome to submit the same photos you submitted to “Not Just a Face,” but I encourage you to share something fresh and new with us. Take your time to study what you learned from Maggie’s story and make some new portraits for this assignment. Have fun with it!

I also want to share with you Maggie’s recent National Geographic magazine story, “Katie’s New Face,” which inspired her “Not Just a Face” and my “Rethinking Portraiture” assignment.

Good luck. I look forward to seeing how you are rethinking portraits.
