A Visual Diary: May 2019

This assignment ran from May 25 to Jun 1, 2019.

From the United Arab Emirates to Hong Kong to Sweden to the United States, see how the Your Shot community spent the same day: May 1, 2019. Think about what you were doing on May 1st… That is why I love these Visual Diary assignments—as National Geographic’s photo community, we are documenting the similarities and differences in our daily lives from around the world.

With this visual diary assignment, we are exploring our lives over the entire month. THIS ASSIGNMENT PROMPT IS SIMPLE: SHARE YOUR BEST TWO PHOTOS TAKEN BETWEEN May 1-31, 2019. If your submission was NOT taken during the month of May, you will NOT be selected for the final story. The deadline is June 1, 2019, at 12 p.m. ET.

I cannot emphasize this enough: to become a better photographer and more thoughtful storyteller, you need to keep making new photos. These “My Best Photos of (Month)” assignments are designed to motivate you to do just that. Practice now so that when you are on vacation or on an assignment you are ready to follow the light, observe your composition, and anticipate the moment.

What I love about these monthly assignments is that anyone can participate and everyone has the same chance to receive an Editor’s Favorite and Editor’s Note. Of the 201 images selected for the past seven “My Best Photos of (Month)” stories, 65 Your Shot photographers were published for the first time. This could be you.
