Although it bears a resemblance to the domesticated chicken, the Sri Lankan Junglefowl is actually not the ancestor of said bird (instead, it is the Red Junglefowl that is the domestic chicken's ancestor). Found only in Sri Lanka, throughout the island, the Sri Lankan Junglefowl is the country's national bird, and is considered to be of "Least Concern" by the IUCN. Nonetheless, it does face threats of hybridisation as well as poaching, and should continue to be protected accordingly.
