Fisherman on the Ganges
The Ganges river is one of the most polluted rivers in the world. Approximately 1 billion litres of raw, untreated sewage are dumped in the river on a daily basis, along with harmful chemicals from factories and farms, tanneries, rubbish and leftovers from the cremation of bodies. In Varanasi, fecal contamination is sometimes more than 150 times the recommended safe level for bathing.
