Definitely one of my heroes is Galileo - here is a little part of a Galileo thermometer with the sun shining through it from behind and of course looking on is the inventor. The thermometer functions on the basis that temperature changes alter the density of fluids and consequently the little coloured baubles which have different densities will float or sink depending on the ambient temperature - now that is smart for now let alone the 1700's
