When my sister called to tell me my brother’s cáncer was terminal and I needed to come, my heart stopped and I could barely speak. There was nothing we could do but be present to support him and gather as a family. On the flight to him in Mexico, I thought about what I could do to celebrate him and decided to take a portrait. I wanted to take it before his body began to show signs of his illness to memorialize him in print the way I will always remember him in my mind. My niece joined him.
