The falconry is a badge of identity for Kazakhs, the largest ethnic minority in Mongolia. During my visit to Mongolia in winter, I stayed with a Kazakh family who just caught an eagle and was training it for hunting. The hunter pointed the eagle towards the moving prey, a dead rabbit being pulled in this case. By repeating such a practice, the hunter imprinted his commands into the eagle’s memory. The secrets of falconry are kept in the hunter family and passed from generation to generation.
