Edit Photo Details Pied Kingfisher   #iraq
A Pied Kingfisher taken at lunchtime in Majnoon, Iraq. This is a desert setting but the species is attracted by an oasis formed by a tributary of the Euphrates river. In recent history this area was wetland but forced drainage by Saddam Hussein's government rendered it desertified, subsequently the front line of the Iran-Iraq war and now a working oilfield there is little habitat left.
