    Hay stacked the traditional way near Koli in Eastern Finland. Harvesting hay this way, cut by hand, then stacked on wooden poles, means that no small deer or other small animals are endangered by the harvester. In Finland the season for hay is short; an entire month (July) is called hay month (heinäkuu; heinä = hay) in Finnish. In Central Europe, in comparison, the first hay on the lowlands is sometimes collected in late April, with up to two more batches to follow.
