Thaipusam is a Hindu festival lasting for two days in honour of Lord Murugan, who represents virtue, power, youth, and is the destroyer of evil. In Singapore, devotees would walk from Sri Thendayuthapani Temple at Tank Road to Layan Sithi Vinayagar Temple at Keong Siak Road. The man in the image is pulling a chariot which is attached on his back through metal hooks piercing the skin, as an act of offering and worship.
