An early morning balloon flight over the Seronera river in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park provided this astonishing, once-in-lifetime view as the basket drifted over the hippos' backs. I shot this with an extreme wide angle, to get as many of the animals' backs in the frame as possible. What you can't get from the picture is the incredible stench, which somebody likened to hippo cologne. That's nature for you, tho'. The ballon meant a silent, unobtrusive approach — gd for hippo & pics alike
