It’s a Slavic tradition, coming from Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia. It is related to the first day of spring. It’s about burning or drowning in the river prepared slim puppets that symbolizing the Slavic goddesses of winter and death. Because of their pagan roots, polish government tried to forbid this tradition, which has completely different meaning nowadays. It is more about the joy of the coming spring, rather than the original symbolism.
