The name “iris” is from the ancient Greek Goddess, a messenger to the gods, who was thought to use the rainbow as a bridge between heaven and earth, and also has a meaning of the good news. Irises became linked to the French monarchy during the Middle Ages, eventually being recognized as their national symbol, the fleur-de-lis.
