The purple spiral.
Marcelo digs for sapphire, with the only help of a metal bar, up to 20 meters deep. He's not only trapped in a hole underground, his whole life has fallen into a spiral he cannot quit.
Miners in Madagascar don't even own the hole they dig. Their employer provides a few tools and some weekly food, but takes 50 percent of the precious stones found. The miners have no other source of income or food and so the system is perpetuated.
In return, Marcelo risks his life daily.
