On our last day in Tanzania, we had the chance to spend time in the Ngorongoro Crater and Conservation Area. This lion, whom I referred to as 'Scar' for his similarity to the Disney character with a dark mane and many facial scars, was the first animal I found that day. I learned manes are actually very important social factors amongst lions. Longer, darker manes demand more respect from the pride and inspire fear in competitors. In addition, darker manes are more likely to attract a mate.
