One of the best places to visit is Hemis Monastery which is 48 kiloneters from Leh , across the indus river. It is the largest and richest gompa built in 1630. The monastery, and the Hemis village was hidden from the rest, as if protected intentionally by the stony little mountains. The daily life of monks was dedicated to worship, in addition to their attendance, the monks spent several hours in reading from the Bible, private prayer, and meditation.
