    I was fortunate enough to see these two elephant calves share a moment of brief kinship in Sri Lanka's Yala National Park before they disappeared into the thorny underbrush. While elephants are somewhat protected animals in Sri Lanka, the same cannot be said elsewhere and populations are thinning. Fortunately for Sri Lankan elephants only males bear tusks making them the less likely to be poached.
