Visiting the Opryland Hotel in Nashville this summer, I stumbled upon a huge youth chess tournament taking place in an enormous ballroom with hundreds of boards. Parents had a small area in the back in which to wait for their kids, but they were often a long way away. The ballrom was intensely quiet with the tension of competition and expectation. In this world, happiness can be a byproduct of the activity - ideally a byproduct of reasons other than winning.
