Kyoto Geisha hunting
The crowded uphill approach to Kyoto's Kiyomizudera temple is known as Chawan-zaka, or “Teapot Lane”, named for its past location as part of a booming ceramics industry. Today the small lane is lined with shops selling handicrafts and souvenirs. The top of the stairs is your most likely place to see Kyoto's geishas or maiko (apprentice geishas). In the mornings you usually find them, more than willing to have the photos taken by curious visitors and adoring local school children.
