A group of sandhill cranes took off at dawn. The synchronicity of their flight pattern was mesmerizing. Every year, thousands of sandhill cranes came to northern California's central valley to rest and fatten up in the fallowed farmland. They roost in shallow man-made lakes created by the US fish and wildlife service at night, and take off in groups at dawn.
