An older elephant seal lays away from the mating crowds where the huge males are getting ready to fight. You can see the marks of old fights on his neck and you can tell he has been through it all. Even though the fights can be pretty brutal between males during the mating season, they will only fight if absolutely required. They use many different signals to convey their disinclination to fight.
