Risqué floral parts of Disa uniflora
Darwin (1862) showed that the vast complexity of orchid flowers has been generated by a suite of invertebrate pollinators. Rudolf Marloth discovered that D. uniflora is pollinated exclusively by the mountain pride butterfly (Aeropetes tulbaghia). These clever flowers realised that monogamous relationships maximise their pollen transfer and fertilisation rates. Also, orchids package their pollen into "satchels" (pollinaria) that attach to their exclusive pollinator on very specific spots.
