"Soul Consoling Tower" Manzanar Memorial
Manzanar Japanese-American WWII Relocation Center cemetery monument stands between Mount Whitney & Death Valley in CA. Its inscription's modern translation, "Memorial to the Dead," fails to express the sorrow felt when walking the grounds where innocent Americans were imprisoned. I have taught Farewell to Manzanar for years and finally got to visit the site with my kids. A father, walking near us with his young sons, stopped at a block's ruins & said, "This is where Grandpa & Uncle Bob lived."
