White is the colour for funerals in Sri Lanka. Flags and posters are displayed to direct people to the funeral house where the body is ceremoniously laid out for friends and family to pay their last respects. Funerals are expensive, so many local communities have funeral societies where each member pays a fixed monthly rate, thereby ensuring that there will be sufficient funds for the expenses when somebody in the community dies.
