Cinder Cone, Lassen Volcanic Park
This mountain of ash within the national park is some distance from Lassen Peak and the main area of volcanic activity. It's a fairly short distance to the summit, yet hiking on volcanic ash takes considerable effort. Jeffrey pines - a sapling is growing out of the base of this boulder - are particularly suited to growing under these harsh conditions.
