On our hike through Tongariro National Park on New Zealand's North Island, I paused to look back at the path that had taken us past two volcanic cones and emerald-coloured lakes. From the distance, the landscape struck me with its uncanny resemblance of an ant hill, with tiny, tiny hikers lined up along the well-trodden path out of the Red Crater.
