Zebra Longwing Butterfly
This photo was taken when my sister and I visited Boone Hall Plantation in Mt Pleasant (just east of Charleston, SC). This species is normally seen in Texas and Florida but migrates north to other American states during the warmer months. Although the official butterfly for the state of Florida, the zebra longwing population has been decimated in Miami-Dade County by the spraying of Naled. There has been mass collapse of the colonies with impacts on the balance of the ecosystem.
