Mountain desert is the area above 2000m altitude that covers the center of the White Mountains sierra in the island of Crete, Greece. The landscape is almost completely void of vegetation (hence the name desert) as a result of heavy snow coverage during winter and harsh hot summer sun. The area spans numerous summits (more than 50), the highest of which is Pachnes (2453m). This is the summit we were trekking to. Strong winds, fog and rain contributed to make the scene even more unearthly.
