Southern Cassowary
The Southern Cassowary is a solitary bird which pairs only in the breeding season during late winter or spring (In Australia it will be Aug/Sept). The unique structure on top of its head is called a casque which is thought to be used in communication as an amplifier or receiver of the birds low frequency vocalisations.
This photo was taken at Ballarat Wildlife Park, about an hour's drive from Melbourne.
