This is a classic beautiful image using light and shadow to create drama. The white dress is perfect for this portrait because it doesn't get lost in the shadow. Horst P. Horst, a very renown Vogue Magazine portrait and fashion photographer used light and shadow in most of his photos, mostly shot in the studio, to create mystery, to make ordinary things become magical, using light and shadow to depict even the idea of love and loss of love or the idea even of life and death. Some photographers like to work along the edge of light and that becomes a trademark in their photographs. I think this is an elegant dramatic portrait, clean and simple and very effective.
