A UNESCO World Heritage site, the iconic Mont St. Michel Abbey stands just off the Normandy coast in northern France. It's spires, buttresses, and rock formations rise from the sea or, when the tide is out, from a mud flat. Fun fact: the abbey is depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts the 1066 AD Norman conquest of England by William the Conqueror.
