Racetrack Playa
The Racetrack Playa is an endorheic basin in the heart of Death Valley. This basin has no drainage other than to dry under the scalding heat of the summer sun. Each year, run off and occasional rains create a thin layer of soft slick mud, which dries into a hexagonal interlocking shapes of about 3-4 inches each. The result is an amazing mosaic that goes as far as the eye can see.
