This male downy woodpecker frequents this tree in my yard. I decided to sit nearby and wait to see if he'd return to his spot in hopes of getting a close up. Sure enough he came back, and while sitting very still, I managed to capture a few shots. I feel its always best not to disturb the animals. If they fly in and fly out on their own terms then it's been a success.
