On a day trip to Monhegan Island, I met this lovely couple. Bob had been reading on his front porch when I first asked to photograph him. We sat together after and he shared the story of his life, which included their beloved parrot. Shadrack died last year at the age of 48 - that's a long time to be part of the family. They are still heartbroken. I asked to see a picture of Shadrack and took this portrait. The painting in the back is of Ann's grandmother who bought the land where they live now
