Carved Into The Mountain
The monastery of Geghard in Armenia is one of the first christian churches and is a UNESCO world heritage site. It was carved into a mountainside cave near the capital city of Yerevan in the early 13th century. The location had been a sacred Zoroastian site for thousands of years prior and even today Zoroastrian type blessings are placed on surrounding trees and upon the surrounding stone walls.
