The genus name of this flower comes from the name of the last king of Illyria Gentius (180-168 BC), who discovered the healing properties of some of the genera. They are used in medicine, and some species also as spices. is a tribute to Gentius, an illyrian king who may have been the discoverer of tonic properties in gentians.
