On a fairly typical summer day on Monterey Bay, foggy and cold, we had to find whales by smelling for them. They have notoriously bad breath, so we go slow in areas where we know they should be, and when we smell it, we turn the boat into the wind and follow the smell. This one was in a large feeding group with several other whales and hundreds of sea lions.
