'Apapane sips nectar
I was thrilled to photograph this 'Apapane last week. We drove one-third of the way up Mt. Halleakalah and then hiked through Hosmer Grove to get a glimpse of this beautiful bird. It is one of four honey creepers native to Hawaii. More than 80% reside on the Big Island, but there is a sizeable population in Maui. 'Apapane mostly rely on sipping nectar from native plant life, but they also consume small insects. 'Apapane face a variety of threats, including conditions created by invasive species.
