Historic Fort Delaware
Fort Delaware is a Civil War-era fort built initially to protect the ports of Philadelphia and Wilmington from Confederate warship attacks, although it was most notably used as a prison for captured Confederate soldiers. The fort is located on Pea Patch Island in the middle of the Delaware River, near its mouth. Today, the fort is the centerpiece of a Delaware State Park which can be accessed by ferry from both the Delaware and New Jersey sides.
