Waiting For Freedom
A young white rhino waits in a boma, blindfolded and partially drugged after a long journey from South Africa, before being released into the wild in Botswana as part of efforts to rebuild Botswana's lost rhino populations. Botswana is saving rhinos from poaching hotspots in neighbouring countries and translocating them to re-establish the populations of rhinos it lost to poaching by 1992.
I agree with Your Shot photographer Nicholas Paoni who commented, "This is such a high impact shot. It masterfully introduces the plight of these magnificent creatures to your viewers. Your choice of an ultra-wide angle lens brings the scene up-close-and-personal. For me the most dramatic element is the red blindfold. It stands out not only as a focal point, but also as a subliminal message of danger for the rhino."
