Cicada Killer. Sphecius speciosus (Crabronidae), commonly referred to as the cicada killer or the cicada hawk, is a large, solitary, digger wasp species. Cicada killers exert a measure of natural control on cicada populations. These wasps are very large, though not aggressive and do not have nest-guarding instinct of honey bees and hornets.
