This little sleeping beauty is an Hawaiian Monk Seal. Named for their solitary nature, they are an endangered species with an estimated 1400 remaining in the wild. Pups are nursed for 6 weeks and then left to fend for themselves. This little gem was sleeping the afternoon off on this rocky shoreline, while the waves absolutely pounded the shore behind. I respectfully maintained my distance while just enjoying being in its presence.
