The mass production and commercialisation of idol puts an undue amount of pressure on the artisans making these idols. A typical workday begins at 9 in the morning and I have seen them working at almost all hours that I have visited the artisan colony of Kumartuli, in north Kolkata. The work which begins by tying bales of hay followed by applying clay to give it a shape followed by dry in a kiln, painting and etc takes immaculate precision and even a tiny lapse can mean an idol being discarded.
