Horned Grebe Side View
For the past several springs, I have spent a lot of time scouring my area for a horned grebe adorned in it's sinister breeding plumage. Passing migrants aren't unusual, but it's quite rare to encounter one sporting any color aside from grey. Last spring, while finishing a hike around the nearby Montour Preserve lake, I was fortunate enough to encounter two grebes fishing near the boat launch. They were quite unaffected by my presence, often fishing quite close, allowing for ample photo ops
